Tricky words do not follow the usual spelling rules, or they have a tricky part. In the English national curriculum for England, they are called common exception words. Children learn them by sight, a few at a time.
This list has the 62 tricky words taught in the Grade 2 English book, in the order they are taught. Each group links to the lesson where the words are taught.
How to use this list
For the adult: practise two or three words a day. Tick the first box when the learner reads a word without help. Tick the second box when they spell it correctly from memory.
To learn a word: Look at it, Say it, Cover it, Write it from memory, then Check it letter by letter. Many words come in families, such as old, cold, gold or could, should, would. Learn a family together.
