Wonder

For the adult: ask this question before you start. Accept every idea. You will come back to it in Reflect.

What are you proudest of learning in Grade 2?

Let’s Learn

For the adult: read this part aloud. The review has four pages. Do one page a day, or two pages in one sitting.

This review checks everything you learned in Term 3, Chapters 7, 8 and 9, and some skills from the whole year.

Page What it checks Lessons
Page 1: Reading explanations, steps in order, cause and effect, a glossary, the writer’s message 7.1, 8.1, 9.1, 9.2
Page 2: Writing similes, persuasion, recipes, formal letters and reports 7.3, 7.4, 8.3, 8.4, 9.3, 9.4
Page 3: Speaking, listening and looking performing, explaining, asking questions to clarify, speeches, group talk, charts and infographics 7.5 to 7.8, 8.5 to 8.8, 9.5 to 9.8
Page 4: Phonics and spelling contractions, apostrophes for owning, -tion, homophones, prefixes, syllables and the year’s tricky words 7.9 to 7.11, 8.9 to 8.11, 9.9 to 9.11

This is the last review of Grade 2. Take your time, and be proud of how much you have learned this year.

Watch Me

For the adult: show how the dictation at the end of Page 4 works.

“At the end of Page 4, you will hear three words and a sentence. I show you with a word that is not in the test: shouldn’t.”

“It is a contraction of should not. I write should, with the -ould pattern, then n, then an apostrophe where the o was, then t: s-h-o-u-l-d-n-‘-t.”

“For the sentence, I listen to the whole thing first. When I hear a homophone, such as there or their, I think about the meaning before I choose the spelling.”

Let’s Try Together

1. The adult says “station”. Clap it. How many syllables are there?

Hint: sta-tion.

2. Write it the short way: the hat that belongs to Mum.

Hint: owner, then ‘s, then the thing.

Where Does Rain Come From?

The water you drink today may once have fallen as rain on a mountain, flowed down a river and floated in the sea. That is because the water on Earth goes round and round in a never-ending journey. This journey is called the water cycle.

Step 1: The Sun heats the water
First, the Sun shines on seas, lakes and rivers and warms the water. Some of the water turns into a gas called water vapour. This is called evaporation. You cannot see water vapour, but it is in the air all around you. You can see evaporation at home: when a puddle dries up on a sunny day, the water has not vanished. It has risen into the air.

Step 2: Clouds form
Next, the warm water vapour rises high into the sky. The higher it goes, the colder the air becomes. As the vapour cools, it turns back into tiny drops of water. This is called condensation. Millions of these tiny drops gather together to make a cloud. You can see condensation at home too, when a cold window steams up after a hot bath.

Step 3: Rain falls
After that, the tiny drops in the cloud bump into each other and join together. They grow bigger and heavier. When they are too heavy to float, they fall to the ground. If the air is cold enough, they fall as snow or hail instead of rain.

Step 4: The water flows back
Finally, the rain soaks into the ground or runs into streams and rivers. Plants drink some of it through their roots, and people collect some of it to use in their homes. Most of the water flows back to the sea. Then the Sun heats it again, and the whole cycle starts once more.

Why the water cycle matters
All living things need fresh water. The water cycle carries fresh water from the sea to the land, so that plants, animals and people can live. It also means that there is no new water on Earth. The same water has been going round and round for a very long time. That is why it is so important to keep our rivers and seas clean, and not to waste the water we use.

Glossary
condensation when water vapour cools and turns back into drops of water
evaporation when water is heated and turns into a gas

Next Steps

If this was easy, try: Look back through your Grade 2 work and choose your three best pieces. Write a sentence about why you chose each one.

If this was hard, go back to: The lessons named next to each page in the answer key. Redo the Your Turn tasks you found hard, then try that page of the review again.
