Tricky words do not follow the sound rules children learn in phonics, or they have a tricky part. Children learn them by sight, a few at a time.

This list has the 50 tricky words from the Grade 1 English book. The first three groups are taught in Lessons 1.11, 3.9 and 9.11. The last group is common Grade 1 words that children meet often in their reading.

How to use this list

For the adult: practise two or three words a day. Tick the first box when the learner reads a word without help. Tick the second box when they spell it correctly from memory.

To learn a word: Look at it, Say it and spell it, Cover it, Write it from memory, then Check it letter by letter.
