For the adult: read this part aloud. The review has four pages. Do one page a day, or two pages in one sitting.
This is the last review of the year. It checks what you learned in Term 3, Chapters 7, 8 and 9, and uses skills from the whole of Grade 1.
It has four pages. Page 1 is reading. Page 2 is writing. Page 3 is speaking, listening and looking. Page 4 is phonics, with a sentence to write at the end.
Read on your own and write in full sentences. When a question asks what you think, give a reason.

“You will hear a sentence. I say: I don’t like the thunder because it’s loud. I say it again.”
“I count the words: I, don’t, like, the, thunder, because, it’s, loud. Eight words.”
“Don’t and it’s are contractions, so I put an apostrophe where the letters are missing. Thunder has two syllables: thun-der, with er at the end. Because is a tricky word: b-e-c-a-u-s-e.”
“I start with a capital I, end with a full stop, and read it back.”

The Big Storm
On Friday night, a big storm blew over the town of Brookside. The wind howled, and rain poured down until morning.
When Nadia and her dad walked into town on Saturday, they saw a tree lying across the road outside Mr Lopez’s bakery. The window was cracked, and the shop was dark.
Mr Lopez stood outside with his arms folded. He looked tired and worried. “I can’t open today,” he said. “My ovens need power, and the power is off.”
Nadia had an idea. “Our house has power,” she said. “Could you bake at our place?”
Mr Lopez smiled for the first time that morning. By lunch, the smell of fresh bread filled Nadia’s kitchen. Her dad and some neighbours carried the loaves to the park, where Mr Lopez sold them from a table.
“This town is like one big family,” said Mr Lopez at the end of the day. Nadia felt proud all the way home.

Pretend you are Mr Lopez. Write a thank-you letter to Nadia. Include a greeting, a detail, how it helped and a closing. Write four sentences.
